Irregular Past Absolute

86. In the irregular past absolute the accent falls on the stem in the first and third persons of the singular. Elsewhere it falls on the ending. In the regular past absolute the stress falls on the ending throughout. See 471.

88. IDIOMS with tener.

a. tener frío, to be cold. yo tengo frío, I am cold, etc.
tener calor, to be warm.  
tener hambre, to be hungry.
tener sed, to be thirsty.
tener miedo, to be afraid.
tener razón, to be right. usted tiene razón, you are right,
etc.
tener sueño, to be sleepy.  
tener ganas, to be desirous, to wish, feel like.

Tener miedo, tener razón, tener ganas are followed by the preposition de before the infinitive, which may complete their meaning:

Tengo miedo de hablar. I am afraid to talk.
Usted no tiene razón de
(also para) quejarse.
You have no reason to complain, or you are not right in complaining.
No tengo ganas de ir. I do not care to go.

b. ¿Cuántos años tiene la niña? How old is the little girl?
Tiene doce años. She is twelve years old.
María tiene veinte años. Mary is twenty years old.

c. ¿Qué tiene V.? What is the matter with you?
Tengo dolor de cabeza. I have a headache.
No tengo nada. Nothing is the matter with me.

d. El niño tiene la cabeza
larga.
The child has a long head,
or
the child's head is long.
La niña tiene ojos negros. The girl's eyes are black.
Yo tengo la barba negra. My beard is black.
