256. Cardinal Numbers.

257. Uno, when not in compounds or when in compounds and following the noun, is inflected as are the adjectives in -o. When it precedes the noun in compounds it is uninflected.

una pluma, one (or a) pen.
página cuarenta y una, page forty-one.
veinte y un meses, twenty-one months.
sesenta y un mesas, sixty-one tables.

258. Ciento becomes cien when immediately before the noun (70 c). Both forms are uninflected. In the plural ciento is inflected as are the adjectives in -o.

cien libros, a hundred books.
doscientas vacas, two hundred cows.
trescientos caballos, three hundred horses.

259. Compound numbers are formed in Spanish in the same way as in English. Y, ' and,' however, is used only between the last two numbers, and only when the last is less than ten.

sesenta y seis, 66.
ciento veinte y tres, 123.
mil cuatrocientos ochenta y ocho, 1488.
dos mil quinientos cuarenta y dos, 2542.

a. After ciento and all plural numbers the y is regularly omitted:

ciento uno, 101.
doscientos seis, 206.
tres mil dos, 3002.

260. All the other cardinal numbers are uninflected.

veinte vacas, twenty cows.
cuarenta y siete discípulos, -as, forty-seven pupils.
trece libros, thirteen books.
mil caballos, a thousand horses.

a. Mil has a plural miles, ' thousands,' and ciento has cientos,
' hundreds.'

b. The indefinite article is omitted before cien, ciento, and mil. Before millón it is always used and the preposition de follows:

un millón de pesos, a million dollars.

261. Ordinal Numbers.

1st. primero 14th. décimo cuarto etc.
2d. segundo 20th. vigésimo
3d. tercero 30th. trigésimo
4th. cuarto 40th. cuadragésimo

262. The ordinals are inflected like other adjectives in -o.

la primera vez, the first time.
el primer capítulo, the first chapter.

a. The ordinals are little used in Spanish, with the exception of primero, segundo, tercero. Their place is taken by the cardinals. In naming sovereigns, however, the ordinals are used up to décimo.

Carlos quinto, Charles the fifth.
Alfonso trece, Alfonso the thirteenth.

b. For the apocopation of primero, tercero and of uno, ciento, see 70.

263. Medio, mitad. Ordinarily ' a half,' when an adjective, is translated by medio, -a; when a noun, by mitad.

dos horas y media, two hours and a half.
Le dí la mitad de la naranja. I gave him half of the orange.

264. Fractional Numbers and other Numerical Expressions.

1/3 un tercio or una tercera parte.
3/4 tres cuartos or tres cuartas partes.
1/5 un quinto or una quinta parte.
1/6 un sexto, 1/7 un séptimo, 1/8 un octavo, 1/9 un noveno, 1/10 un décimo.
From 1/11 onwards fractional numbers are formed by adding -avo to the corresponding cardinal:
1/11 un onzavo, 1/12 un dozavo, 1/13 un trezavo, 1/14 un catorzavo, 1/30 un treintavo. The final -e or -o remains in 17, 18, 19.
una docena, a dozen.
doble, double.
una vez, once.
dos veces, twice, etc.

265. The arithmetical signs are:

+, más /, dividido por
x, por =, (es) igual a, es, or son
-, menos
 
2 x 2 = 4 dos (multiplicado) por dos son cuatro.
7 + 8 = 15 siete y (or más) ocho son quince.
21 - 9 = 12 veintiuno menos nueve es doce
(or (es) igual a doce).
18 / 3 = 6 dieciocho dividido por tres es seis.
11 and 12 and 8 are 31 once y doce y ocho son treinta y uno.
1, 3 to carry uno, llevo tres (or van tres).
