194. In certain verbs the vowels
e
and o of the syllable preceding the
infinitive ending undergo certain regular changes. These verbs fall
into three classes, which are sometimes called the first, second
and third classes of irregular or radical-changing verbs. For the
rules governing all the changes in question, see 461-466.

Verbs of this class are all of the first and second conjugations.

195. The following radical-changing verbs belong
to the first class:

acordarse, to remember. calentar, to warm.
acostarse, to go to bed, lie. cerrar, to close.
almorzar, to breakfast. comenzar, to begin.
contar, to count. despertar, to awake, awaken.
costar, to cost. negar, to deny.
mostrar, to show. pensar (en), to think.
probar, to prove, try. sembrar, to sow, plant.
soltar, to loosen, let go. sentarse, to sit down.
volar, to fly. entender, to understand.
cocer, to cook. perder, to lose.
volver,1 to turn, return.
